LAWRENCE, Kan. – Senior Myesha Dixon started the 2013 indoor track season with a bang after winning the 60-meter hurdles in the 2013 season opener for the Lady Panther track team at the Bill Easton Classic on Saturday on the University of Kansas campus.
Dixon, who had an impressive junior season, began the 2013 campaign in similar fashion to last season with a first-place time of 8.67 to win the 60-meter hurdles. Ugonna Okpala placed second in the 400-meter dash with a second-place run of 1:00.4 while Erial Henderson finished fourth with a time of 1:02.2 in the 400.
Donna Gilbert (2:26.74), Nesmeyea Bazzy (2:35.5) and Kia Allen (2:36.10) placed 2-3-4 in the 800. The distance medley quartet of Guadalupe Bustamente, Gilbert, Leticia Bustamente and Martha Bustamante finished second (12:37.94) while the mile relay team of Sylvonna Thompson, Kelsi Alexander, Okpala and Terracia Moody also placed second with a mark of 3:57.11.
In the field events, Dixon placed fourth in the long jump as she recorded a length of 18-02.5 feet. Senior Brittany Earl began the year on a strong note with a third-place (40-0) throw in the shot put.
The Lady Panthers return to action this weekend as they'll travel to College Station, Texas for the annual Texas A&M 12-Team Invitational at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
