Softball Splits Pair In Contrasting Fashions With Langston

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2

Prairie View A&M split a pair of softball games with Langston University on Saturday afternoon as they claimed a 3-0 shutout in the opener followed by a 13-3 loss in game two.

Junior pitcher Cally Falls threw a three-hit shutout in the opener while the PV offense did the rest in a 3-0 win.

Prairie View A&M scored first in the third inning as freshman Peyton Simms reached first on a bunt single, stole second and eventually scored on a Langston fielding error for the early 1-0 lead.  In the fifth, junior first baseman Sarina Rios hit a solo homer over the right field fence to lead off the inning en route to a 2-0 lead.  Five batters later, the Lady Panthers moved ahead 3-0 as Brenecia Woods' RBI single scored Simms.

Langston threatened to get on the scoreboard in the sixth as they loaded the bases with two outs.  However, Falls held firm and forced LU's Melissa Naylor to fly out to center for the inning-ending out.

Falls (6-4) went the distance and recorded six strikeouts on three hits while walking two batters.  Simms scored two runs while Rios and Woods recorded RBIs.

A seven-run second inning was all Langston needed as they cruised to a 13-3 win in game two.

With one out in the second, starter Lauren Grun ran into trouble as six consecutive batters reached base highlighted by a three-run homer from Langston's Ashley Fabian for the 7-0 lead.  LU added another run the fourth off reliever Meah Maddox before putting the game away with a five-run fifth for the 13-0 lead.

PV's bats awoke in the fifth as they recorded three of the team's five hits in the inning.  Freshman Rachel Rodriguez had a two-RBI single followed by Woods' RBI single en route to a three-run frame.  However, the damage was already done as the game was called due to the 10-run rule after five innings of play.

Grun dropped to 2-2 while Woods batted 2-for-3 with an RBI.

The Lady Panthers return to action Wednesday afternoon as they'll host Texas College at 1 p.m. in Prairie View.
