PV Men's Tennis Claims No. 1 Seed In SWAC Tournament


The Prairie View A&M Men's Tennis team clinched the No. 1 seed in the Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament after finishing the SWAC Roundup with a perfect record at 5-0 in conference play. The Panthers defeated Alcorn State 4-3 on March 29, and then followed it up with a 7-0 win over Arkansas Pine Bluff.

Jackson Varney, Craig Wiltz, Ronald Chidzikwe and Jonathan Dingle finished their SWAC seasons off with undefeated records. In SWAC singles matches as a team, Prairie View A&M finished with a 28-2 SWAC record overall.

In a pivotal match between conference powers, Varney defeated Ernesto Santillan of Alcorn State of Alcorn State at the No. 1 slot to help his team in the 4-3 win. No. 3 Craig Wiltz defeated Vitali Vasileuski 7-6 (7-1), 6-3 in singles competition, while Ronald Chidzikwe defeated Garry Amor 6-1, 6-1. At the No. 6 spot, Jonathan Dingle's 6-0, 6-1 win over Bhavtaran Singh was the difference maker. The Panthers lost the doubles point, and Karim Fotso and Daniel Vasquez lost their singles points in hard-fought matches.

Prairie View A&M went on to beat UAPB 7-0 in its final match of the round-up to take the No. 1 seed in the SWAC Tournament, which will be held on Friday, April 19 in New Orleans, La. In their 7-0 win, the Panthers witnessed Ronald Chidzikwe improve to a 9-7 overall record. He boasts the best overall record on the team and is 7-3 this season while playing at the No. 4 slot for Prairie View A&M coach John Cochran.

The Panthers have a 5 p.m. match on April 14 at Rice in Houston before heading to the SWAC Tournament.
