WACO - The men's tennis team's season came to an end on Friday after the Panthers suffered a 4-0 loss to No. 13 ranked Baylor in the Waco regional of the NCAA Tournament. Prairie View A&M lost in the sweep, but it received competitive performance from the doubles team of Trenton Johnson and Rasaki Gbadamosi and singles play from Jackson Varney.

"It was a good experience playing a top-quality team,” Prairie View A&M coach John Cochran said. “They were No. 13 in the nation. Baylor overpowered us. We did our best trying to hang with them at times - a little bit in the doubles and a couple of guys in singles.”

In the No. 3 doubles slot, Johnson and Gbadamosi took the first game from Baylor's Julian Lenz and Tony Lupieri to take the first game off of the serve. Prairie View A&M's duo managed to stay ahead via the serve and eventually took a 4-3 lead in the match. However, Lenz and Lupieri rallied back and took a 7-4 lead before the match was called because Baylor won the other two doubles matches 8-1, 8-1 to secure the doubles point.

In singles play in the No. 1 slot, Varney gave No. 55 ranked Julian Lenz trouble in the early games of the match. Varney held a 2-1 lead before a light rain started and Lenz tied the match at 2-2. The rain forced all of singles play to be moved to the Hawkins Indoor Tennis Center, where Lenz took control of the match. The match between the top players was called with Lenz holding a 1-set lead when Lupieri defeated Ronald Chidzikwe in the No. 3 slot to give Baylor the match-deciding victory.

“The change of venue threw us off a little bit, but that's no excuse,” Cochran said. “We just got beat by a better team."
