Alicia Pete, a mainstay on the Prairie View A&M University campus, was named Vice President of Operations / SWA In October 2018.
One of the “Legends of the Hill,” Pete has transitioned from a highly successful student-athlete and coach to one of the top collegiate administrators. She has spent the previous two years as Associate Athletic Director for Internal Operations / Senior Woman Administrator at Prairie View A&M as of September 1, 2016.
A 2015 SWAC Hall of Fame inductee – recognizing her PVAMU volleyball career that earned her induction into the school’s Sports Hall of in 2012 – Pete will oversee all functional operations to include but not limited to game day operations, athletic compliance, and academics and will directly support fourteen of the eighteen sports.
Pete also serves as PVAMU's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee advisor, coordinating the athletic department's community service efforts.
She has also represented Prairie View A&M University on a national level by serving several years as a member on the NCAA Division I Championships/Competition Cabinet along with being the Chairperson of the SWAC's Senior Woman Administrators. She was named Senior Woman Administrator in 1999, and added her current title in 2003.
Pete added assistant athletic director responsibilities while serving as Head Volleyball Coach from 1999 through 2014. She led the Lady Panthers to two SWAC Championships (1999, 2006) and the team’s first two NCAA Tournament appearances in program history, earning Pete SWAC Coach of the Year Honors after each championship. The 1999 league title, just the second SWAC volleyball crown in school history, garnered Pete recognition by Don Powell of the Texas A&M Board of Regents.
In returning to Prairie View A&M in 1997, Pete initially made history in the coaching ranks as head coach of the first Lady Panther Bowling team, which she lead until 1999. She also had a brief stint as assistant softball coach in 2001.
A native of San Antonio, Texas, Pete was a four-year letterwinner with the Lady Panther volleyball team from, concluding her playing career at the end of the 1990 season. She earned All-SWAC honors and was selected to the SWAC All-Tournament team in 1989 and 1990.
Active in the community, Pete has volunteered her time with the annual Toys for Tots Program and Prairie View A&M’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee in addition to serving as a member of Order of Eastern Star and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. She is also a member of the school’s Athletic Council.
She received both a bachelor’s degree in business administration in 1991 and a master’s degree in health in 1998 from Prairie View A&M University. Pete is married to John O. Pete, Sr. They have four children –John, Jr., Ricky, Xavier, and Bryson.
