Charles L. Malone was a graduate of Burnett High School in Terrell, Texas and was an outstanding student and athlete. Charles was a three-Year Letterman at Burnett High and was selected All-District Center for two years. He served as Captain of the football team in 1956. Malone left his mark in high school in Terrell and was inducted into the Burnett High School "Tiger Hall of Fame" in 1992. He was also a four-Year Honor Student at Burnett.
Following graduation from high school, Charles entered Prairie View A&M College on a four-year athletic scholarship and played for college football legend, Coach "Billy" Nicks. Charles went on to letter each year as a center/linebacker. He was selected Co-Captain of the 1960 Football team and was an All-American center in 1960. He was the only All-American Football Center and one of 26 First-Team All-Americans selected by the Pittsburgh Courier in the history of Prairie View's Athletic Program. During his four-year tenure (1957-1960), the team recorded 35 wins, six losses and two ties. Prairie View also won one Black college National Championship (1958), two SWAC Championships and two second-place SWAC finishes for a won/lost percentage of 81 percent.
Malone obtained a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education and a master’s in Economics from Prairie View A&M College. He was a successful coach, administrator and teacher in the Terrell and Dallas Independent School Districts. He mentored several outstanding college and professional athletes including Wayne Morris (St. Louis Cardinals), Brett Maxie (New Orleans Saints) and Michael Downs (Dallas Cowboys).
Charles is married to the former Paula Smith and they have two daughters, Vivian and Valerie.
