Guy Manning of Oakwood, Texas played basketball at Prairie View A&M from 1962-1966, becoming one of the most explosive scorers in the nation during his days as a Panther.
Majoring in Physical Education with a minor in Biology, Manning became a three-time NAIA All-American during his days on the Hill, leading the nation in scoring twice with averages of 39.1 points and 36.6 points per game, respectively.
Following his graduation, Manning signed with the St. Louis Hawks and later with the Baltimore Bullets of the (NBA), and finally with the Houston Mavericks of the American Basketball Association, playing five seasons professionally while negotiating on behalf of himself..
Following his athletics career, Manning later served as an executive at Southwestern Bell and after retiring from that post, he became self-employed as a Charolais Cattle Rancher.
An active presence within his community, Manning has served on numerous boards of directors, including the Girl Scouts of America and the Texas Rural Communities, Inc. He is one of the organizers of the Absentee Land Owners Association and his ranch was named the Absentee Ranch of the year in 1989. He is the leader of the Pastor Parish Relations Committee in his church, a member of the Men’s Chorus, and Chairman of the United Methodist Church Administrative Board.
Manning was elected to membership in the Prairie View Sports Hall of Fame in 2005. He has been married to Christine for 53 years; they have one son, Guy Jr.
