Harry H. "Shag" Haywood is a native of San Angelo, Texas where he attended Blackshear High School. Harry was a star member of the football, track, basketball and baseball teams. He excelled academically as an honor student and was selected valedictorian of his graduating class.
Haywood arrived at Prairie View A&M College in 1947 on a four-year athletic scholarship and became a member of PV's football team coached by three outstanding legends - Coach "Billy" Nicks (1947), Coach "Pop" Long (1948) and Coach Jimmy Stevens (1949-50). Haywood brought his football skills forward and lettered as a solid hard running fullback all four years and a track hurdler one year. He was a three-year starter and Co-Captain of the 1950-51 football team. "Shag" was an All-SWAC Performer in 1949 and 1950.
Haywood graduated from Prairie View A&M College with a bachelor’s degree in Biology and a Commissioned Officer in the Army Reserve Corps. He received a Master’s Degree from the University of Southern California in Education and Administration. Harry had a passion for teaching and was greatly loved by his peers and students. During his teaching career, he received many awards and recognition from school districts, community, religious organizations, fraternity and the military.
Harry is married to Mary Haywood and has three sons, Harry IV, Michael and Christopher and three daughters, La Rena, Nancy and Drusilla.
