Prairie View A&M legend and Pro Football Hall of Famer Ken Houston scored touchdowns four different ways during his NFL career – interception return, punt return, fumble return and blocked field goal return.
The versatility displayed on the NFL stage was emblematic of his Prairie View A&M career. Some may know that Houston also played center as well as linebacker for the Panthers and played on the 1963 National Championship team. Fewer may know he also ran track and was on the swim team during his collegiate career.
Houston played linebacker for the Panthers before being drafted in the ninth round of the AFL-NFL Draft by the Houston Oilers. Over his 14-year career (six with Houston Oilers 1967-'72, eight with Washington Redskins 1973-'80), Houston played safety and started the majority of the nearly 200 games he played in, earning 12 Pro Bowl appearances. He intercepted 49 passes in his career, retuning nine for touchdowns, which was an NFL record at the time of his retirement, while scoring 12 total touchdowns.
The Lufkin, Texas native had arguably his best season in 1971, setting career highs in interceptions (nine), interception returns yards (220). He returned four interceptions for touchdowns that season, an NFL single-season record that has been matched only twice since that time. Houston was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1986.
