Athletic Department Wins SWAC's Institutional Academic Excellence Award With 116 Student-Athletes Posting 3.0 GPAs or Higher

The Prairie View A&M Department of Athletics displayed its prowess in the classroom recently as the department earned the Southwestern Athletic Conference's Institutional Academic Excellence Award as a total of 116 student-athletes posted GPAs of 3.0 or better during the 2010-11 academic year.

“Academic excellence is the foundation for success on-and-off the playing field,” said Director of Athletics Fred Washington.  “With 36 percent of our student-athletes maintaining a 3.0 GPA (or above), it is clear they have taken seriously the opportunity that a college education provides. I am excited for our students as this is just a small indication of the fruit their efforts will produce. For a Panther, 'The Best is Yet to Come'.”

On the men's side, the Panther football team led the way with 16 student-athletes holding 3.0 or higher GPAs while the soccer team led the women's sports with 14 student-athletes.  Nearly the entire men's tennis team were honored with a total of 11 athletes holding 3.0 or higher GPAs.
