Alabama State Shocks Lady Panthers

MONTGOMERY,Ala. - The Prairie View A&M Lady Panthers watched as their season-best three-game win streak came to an end in a 67-53 loss to Alabama State on Saturday afternoon in the Acadome.

In an effort in which Prairie View A&M coach Toyelle Wilson said her team was just plain out-played, the Lady Hornets out-rebounded Prairie View 44-22. The Lady Panthers also allowed 22 points in the paint and 17 second-chance points off of 15 offensive rebounds.

“We got out-worked and out-hustled,” Wilson said. “They wanted it more. You could see it from the jump we didn't execute our game-plan. Everyone didn't show up. Unfortunately, with so little players if you don't have everybody show up then you are not going to be successful.”

With 14 points and six rebounds, junior guard Latia Williams fell below her Southwestern Athletic Conference play average of a double-double, but she was the team's second-leading scorer and leading rebounder. Junior guard Kiara Etienne led the team in scoring. She finished with 15 points and two rebounds.

The Lady Panthers only trailed Alabama State 27-22 at the half despite losing Latia Williams, their leading rebounder and second-leading scorer, to three fouls.

Etienne finished the half with nine points and two rebounds to her name, but Prairie View struggled to get production from anyone other than the junior guard in the first half. Etienne went 4-for-8 from the field while the rest of the team shot 4-of-17. The Lady Panthers shot 32 percent from the field in the first half, while Alabama State worked its way inside-out on the way to shooting 46.2 percent from the field.

Ashley Jones had 10 points at the half from the post to lead all players in scoring through the first 20 minutes of play, and she finished the game with 14 points and eight rebounds. After going 5-for-10 from downtown, Erica Henderson led Alabama State in scoring with 18 points.

Prairie View A&M will play Alabama A&M at 5:30 p.m. in Huntsville, Ala. on Monday, Jan. 30.
