The Prairie View A&M women's basketball team dropped its Southwestern Athletic Conference opener against Southern on Tuesday night in a tightly-contested 58-53 game in the William Nicks Building on the Prairie View A&M campus.

The Lady Panthers could not capitalize off of a 25-23 half-time lead and a double-double performance by junior guard Latia Williams, who scored 13 points and grabbed 17 rebounds.

Prairie View actually held a 47-46 lead over the Jaguars with 3:54 left in the game following a driving layup by freshman point guard Jeanette Jackson. That lead, however, evaporated as the Lady Panthers went scoreless until junior guard Kiara Etienne hit a three-point shot with the assist from Latia Williams to stop a 10-0 run and cut her team's deficit to 56-50 with 12 seconds remaining.

Etienne, who had been shooting over 44 percent from the field and averaging 20.4 points per game over her last four contests, cooled off. She scored nine points on 3-of-13 shooting and had five rebounds. Jackson scored nine of her 12 points in the second half and also shared the team-high in assists (three) with sophomore point guard LaReahn Washington.

Prairie View fell to 3-9 (0-1 SWAC) with the heart-breaking loss. Lady Panthers head coach Toyelle Wilson fell to 2-2 all-time against Southern. Her last loss to the Lady Jaguars prior to Tuesday night was on Jan. 6, 2011 in Baton Rouge, La. Southern improved to 2-6 (1-0 SWAC) with the win.

The Lady Panthers will play host to Alcorn State at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday in the William Nicks Building. The Lady Braves are 3-10 (1-0 SWAC) after winning their conference opener against Texas Southern 51-48.

The game will be broadcasted live on KPVU 91.3 FM and can be heard via the airwaves or Internet at www.pvamu.edu/kpvu.  Smartphone and tablet users can also hear the game live by downloading the Tune-In application for their respective devices and selecting KPVU 91.3 FM.
