PV Men's Tennis Finds Groove In Two Tournaments

The Prairie View A&M men won four-of-seven singles flights at the Third Annual Doc Skogman Invitational, competing against 16 schools and 29 teams.

Newcomer Jackson Varney led the way for the Panthers with a 7-5, 7-5 win in the championship game of the B Singles flight over Jonathan Taylor from Jacksonville College. In C Singles Daniel Vasquez came through with a third place (6-4, 6-7(5), 1-0(9) win over Midwestern State's Jay Henton. Last season's SWAC Freshman of the Year, Trenton Johnson came through with a dominating 6-0, 6-2 win over MSU's Mitch Beenhakker in E Singles, while Rasaki Gbadamosi finished with a 6-1, 7-5 win in the F Singles flight for Prairie View A&M. Junior Jonathan Dingle rounded it out with a 6-4, 4-6, 1-0(5) win in his flight over Texas Lutheran's David Schneider.

At the HBCU National Tennis Championships Prairie View A&M was not as dominant, but it put on a solid performance. Dingle made it to the semifinal match of the Men's C Flight singles, losing 7-6, 6-2 to Mortiz Pronath out of Bethune Cookman.  In the A and B Flights, Prairie View A&M failed to advance a player past the quarterfinals.

In A Doubles Flight at the HBCU Tennis Championships the Panthers team of Kristen Powell and Craig Wiltz made it to the semifinal round and lost an 8-5 match to Seve Day and Juan Varon of Bethune Cookman.  In the B Flight, Temuera Asafu-Asjaye and Gbadamosi made it to the semifinals out of a 16-team draw.

Prairie View A&M's next Tournament will be at the ITA Regional Championships on Oct. 19 in Waco, Texas.
