Lady Panthers Survive Scare From Jackson State

BOX SCORE BOX SCORE

Saturday's game featuring Prairie View A&M and Jackson State had the makings to go down to the last second. The previous two regular season contests between the two teams had been decided by a total of three points, and this one didn't disappoint.

The Lady Panthers held off a late Jackson State surge as Kiara Etienne and Jeanette Jackson combined for 35 points in a 55-54 win.

Prairie View A&M held a 49-40 lead with 10:15 left in the game after junior guard Kiara Etienne hit a pull-up jumper. However, the Lady Panthers went on a four-minute scoring drought following that play and Jackson State went on a 6-0 run, which was capped off by two free throws from Rachel Jones. Prairie View A&M would maintain at least a three-point lead until Jones hit another pair of free throws with 1:23 left to cut her team's deficit to 53-51.

Following a Latia Williams' layup for Prairie View A&M with 55 seconds left, the Lady Panthers went 1-for-3 from the free throw line on one-and-one opportunities, and Jackson State scored two easy baskets in transition to get a chance at one last shot trailing 56-55 with three seconds left. Jones missed the half-court heave and the Lady Panthers prevailed to split the season series.

With the win, the Lady Panthers avenged a two-point loss suffered in Jackson on Jan. 14 and improved to 6-5 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play.

Prairie View A&M jumped out to an early lead and maintained it in the first half. The Lady Panthers capitalized off of the hot hand of Etienne, who scored 16 first-half points en route to a 35-24 first-half lead. She finished with 18 points.

Etienne was on fire from downtown. She shot 4-for-7 from the three-point range and was 6-of-11 from the field. The Lady Panthers also got production from the other wing in the form of Latia Williams. She had seven points and four rebounds at the half and finished with 12 points and five boards.

Prairie View A&M will play host to Grambling State in their Play For Kay game on Monday, Feb. 13 at 5:30 p.m. The Lady Panthers will play in their pink uniforms for breast cancer awareness, and donations will be taken for the Kay Yow Foundation for cancer research.  Fans are encouraged to wear pink.
