Lady Panthers Dominate Grambling State

BOX SCORE Grambling State stood between the Prairie View A&M women's basketball team and its second three-game win streak of the season. The Lady Panthers stared past their opponents and ran over them in a convincing 73-55 win Monday night in the William Nicks Building.

Latia Williams went off for 21 points and five rebounds as Prairie View A&M improved to 7-5 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference with a 10-13 overall record. It was all about team basketball and easy, baskets off of crisp ball movement for the Lady Panthers. Freshman point guard Jeanette Jackson led the way with seven assists. Prairie View A&M had 17 total assists.

Michaela Burton was the recipient of a few of those passes. Moving into the starting role, Burton scored 17 points for the Lady Panthers. She took three uncontested shots from the perimeter and made each of them thanks to drive and dishes by Jackson and sophomore point guard LaReahn Washington, who finished with two assists.

The Lady Panthers went 4-for-10 from the three-point line in the first half and shot 51.7 percent from the field on the way to taking a 35-24 halftime lead. Prairie View A&M's hot shooting continued in the second half, as the Lady Panthers outscored Grambling State 38-31 and finished the game shooting 50 percent from the field.  Junior guard Kiara Etienne added her usual production, scoring 13 points on 5-for 11 shooting.

Monday's win secured a regular season sweep over the Lady Tigers and Prairie View moved into fifth place in the SWAC. Grambling State dropped to sixth place with a 7-6 SWAC record. Prairie View has the chance to shake the conference standings up on its road trip to Mississippi Valley State and Arkansas-Pine Bluff this Saturday beginning at 2:30 p.m. in Itta Bena, Miss.

Mississippi Valley State (12-12, 9-4 SWAC) is in second place behind Southern (11-9, 10-3 SWAC). Prairie View beat both teams on Jan. 21 and Jan. 23 at home in the William Nicks Building and will have the chance to go for the regular season sweep starting with the Devilettes on Saturday.
