After starting the season off 0-7, the men's tennis team found their groove in the SWAC Round-Up and went 4-0 against conference teams in a display of pure dominance in Jackson, Miss. from Feb. 24-25.

Playing four matches in two days, the Panthers started the tournament off with a pace-setting 7-0 win against Mississippi Valley State on Feb. 24. The Panthers didn't drop a single set against the Delta Devils and used the momentum to take out a tough Jackson State team in their second match of the day.
 5-2.

Ronald Chidzikwe, Trenton Johnson and David Aldaz led the way for the Panthers in singles play, picking up key victories. Then in doubles competition Kristen Powell and Ronald Chidzikwe defeated the team of Navaneetha Baskaran and Jose Luque in a back-and-forth 8-6 match. Then Trenton Johnson and Juan Pablo Robles won their match 8-3.

On Saturday, Feb. 25 the Panthers beat Alabama A&M 5-2 and were tested. In singles play Prairie View was forced to go into three sets in three different matches. Robles won his match against Nicholas Burger 4-6, 6-1, 10-4 and went on to finish the weekend 3-1. He and doubles partner Johnson also went undefeated in the SWAC Round-Up. Johnson went a perfect 4-0 in the roundup at the No. 4 spot.

After beating Alabama State 6-1 to close out the tournament, the Panthers have a heap of momentum on their side. Head coach John Cochran said it could be a sign of things to come.

“If we keep working hard and the team stays humble, we have as good a shot as anybody to win the SWAC Championship,” Cochran said. “They have to realize we have to fight for every win. If they get complacent with this little bit of success then its not going to be good for us.”

The Panthers have time to hit the practice courts before their next match on Friday, March 9 at Texas-San Antonio.
