The Prairie View A&M volleyball team banded together for a scrappy 3-0 win over Huston-Tillotson Tuesday night in the William Nicks Building.
Fresh off of her fourth-consecutive SWAC Newcomer Of The Week award, junior setter Kelsey Espinosa turned in a 35 assists night, led the Lady Panthers with eight digs and dropped in two service aces.
Sophomore middle Charae Caldwell and junior middle Amelia Velez made the most of their opportunities, both tallying eight kills for the Lady Panthers. Velez had a team-high .429 attack percentage and dropped in three service aces to lead Prairie View A&M with 11 points. Caldwell had a .357 attack percentage.
The Lady Panthers were out-blocked 15-0 by the Rams and overcame 25 attack errors en route to coming away with the victory. Prairie View A&M entered the third set with a 2-0 lead after winning the first and second sets 25-20 and 25-17.
Huston-Tillotson, however, put up a huge struggle in Set 3, taking an 21-18 lead as it stunned the Lady Panthers and the spectators in the William Nicks building. Prairie View A&M rallied back with a 7-2 run, which was capped off with a kill by by outside hitter Bruna Menezes, a service ace by libero LaKeisha Allen and a kill by Velez with the assist from Espinosa to go up 25-23 and complete the three-game sweep.
The Lady Panthers (5-14, 1-0 SWAC) will play hosts to McNeese State at 7 p.m. Thursday in the William Nicks Building in a non-conference match up.
