Lady Panthers Go 3-1 In The Southern Volleyball Invite

The Lady Panthers put together their best performances of the season in the Southern Invitational Volleyball Tournament to go 3-1 over the weekend, which included putting together back-to-back 3-0 victories on Saturday.

Prairie View A&M defeated Southern 25-22, 25-19, 25-17 on Saturday morning to avenge a 3-2 loss it suffered earlier on Wednesday by the Jaguars. Then the Lady Panthers crushed Alcorn State in a 2 p.m. match by a score of  25-13, 25-6, 25-17. The match only lasted 50 minutes, and Prairie View A&M was efficient on the prowl with only nine attack errors in the match on 41 kills and 88 attacks for a team attack percentage of .364.

Against Alcorn State senior outside hitter Charae Caldwell and junior middle blocker Magda Zietek picked apart their opponents. Both finished the game with 10 kills and .600 attack percentages. Senior setter Kelsey Espinosa ran the offense and finished with 22 assists to go along with four kills and three services aces for seven points. Freshman outside hitter Lenicia Tyson also made an impact, tallying seven kills, two solo blocks and one block assist score 9.5 point for Prairie View A&M vs. Alcorn

In their revenge-driven win over Southern, the Lady Panthers received another monster game from Zietek offensively. She exploded for 14 kills off of 22 attacks with just two errors for a .545 attack percentage. Zietek was also a force defensively and finished one dig away from recording a double-double. 

Senior outside hitter Candyce Alexander and senior middle Blocker Janette Batista had nine kills each in the team's 3-0 win over Southern. Alexander finished with a team-high .571 attack percentage and also provided two service aces to account for at least 11 points. Prairie View A&M was efficient as a team, finishing with a .368 attack percentage, and Espinosa was the ring leader setting up teammates with 35 assists. 

Prairie View A&M has a 6 p.m. match on Tuesday at Arkansas-Pine Bluff in Pine Bluff, Ark. before returning to Prairie View for a five-game home-stand beginning with Grambling State on Oct. 10.
