Lady Panthers Drop Home-Opener To HBU

BOX SCORE

The Prairie View A&M volleyball team could not fend off Houston Baptist in a 3-0 loss on Tuesday night in the William Nicks Building (The Baby Dome).

The Lady Panthers were sluggish in the first set. Houston Baptist, led by Caiti Wenger, jumped out early and never looked back as it won in convincing fashion. 25-11. Wenger had a game-high 14 kills and a .650 attack percentage on the night.

Led by two-time defending Southwestern Athletic Conference Newcomer Of The Week Magda Zietek, Prairie View A&M fought back in Set 2. Despite losing the set, Zietek scored three of the Lady Panthers final four points with kills. She swatted down a sloppy over by HBU to cut her team's deficit to 22-19. However, the Huskies closed out the set on a 3-1 run to take a decisive 2-0 lead in the match. Zietek had a team and career-high 11  kills to complement five digs and two blocks. Senior middle Janette Batista had nine kills and five digs in her debut in a purple and gold uniform. Meanwhile senior setter Kelsey Espinosa recorded a season-high 19 assists.

Houston Baptist claimed the final set 25-18 in anticlimactic fashion. A Lady Panthers substitution error on the team's own serve ended the set and HBU took the match.

Next up for Prairie View A&M is the McNeese Big Daddy's Invitational in Lake Charles, La. They start play in the bracket at 11:30 a.m. on Friday vs. Southern Miss.
