Big Games By Jackson, Scott Are Not Enough For Lady Panthers

BOX SCORE A 25-point performance by junior point guard Jeanette Jackson and a double-double by junior forward Larissa Scott was not enough for Prairie View A&M to overcome Southern in an 88-74 loss at home Saturday in the William Nicks Building.

Jackson finished one rebound shy of her first career double-double, and Scott collected her third-consecutive double with 15 points and 14 rebounds to complement three blocks, but their efforts were overshadowed by Jasmine Jefferson (22 points and 16 rebounds), Adrian Sanders (21 points and three steals) and a Southern offense that shot 48 percent from the floor in the second half.

The Lady Panthers entered the locker room at halftime trailing 39-38, eying the lead and a win to start off Southwestern Athletic Conference play. A Jackson converted jumper with 12:51 remaining gave the Lady Panthers a 55-54 lead. There were five lead changes from that point until Southern took the lead for good off of Coleman layup with 9:54 remaining to go up 62-61.

Southern (4-5, 1-0 SWAC) held the Lady Panthers at bay, and won the game in the trenches with 42 points in the paint compared to 17 by the Prairie View A&M offense. The Lady Panthers held Kendra Coleman, Southern's leading scorer at 19.1 points per game to 12 points and just three assists. Meanwhile Prairie View A&M freshman forward Alexus Parker scored a career-high 10 points.

The Lady Panthers (0-11, 0-1 SWAC) will try to bounce back from the loss by defeating Alcorn State (1-11, 0-1 SWAC) at 5:30 p.m. on Monday.
