Lady Panthers sweep Huston-Tillotson for first road victory

AUSTIN – The Prairie View A&M Lady Panthers survived late rally attempts by Huston-Tillotson in the second and third sets and swept the Rams for their first road win of the season Wednesday.

Scores of the match were 25-17, 25-20, and 25-23.

Candyce Alexander and Mariah Cox led the Lady Panthers to victory in front of an enthusiastic HT crowd of nearly 400 fans at the campus' Mary Branch Gymnasium. Alexander posted a game-high 13 kills, while Cox knocked down 12 kills and posted a season-best .632 hitting percentage.

Haley Dibbern added eight kills for the Lady Panthers (6-14). Setter Ana Kiso posted a double-double, handing out 31 assists and digging 10 opposition attacks.

The Lady Rams led in each of the final two sets, but were unable to fend off the Panther attack, led in particular by Alexander and Cox. HT (4-15) led 18-17 in set two, but an 8-2 run by the Panthers, with two kills by Alexander, gave PVAMU a 2-0 lead in sets.

In the third set, the Rams led by as many as four sets early on and again led at the 18-17 mark. HT also led 23-22 in the set before the Panthers ended it with a 3-0 run.

Chandler Bacon served the penultimate point in set three  before Jasmine Lewis ended the match with a kill that was set by Dibbern.

As a team, the Lady Panthers hit .314 in the match, their second-highest hitting percentage of the season. They hit .326 two weeks ago when they faced Huston-Tillotson at home.

The Lady Panthers return to action next Thursday when they host rival Texas Southern in a Southwestern Athletic Conference match. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
