Prairie View A&M prepares for its final homecoming at historic Blackshear Field this weekend as they host Alabama State at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
The Panthers enter with a bout of momentum as they're coming off a 48-30 win over Jackson State in Jackson, Miss. for the first time since 1970. Prairie View A&M outscored JSU 31-3 in the second half and amassed 300+ rushing yards against the Tigers. The team also forced several timely turnovers in the second half while also controlling the clock from start to finish.
Alabama State has a four-game winning streak over the Panthers dating back to 2010. Even though ASU has controlled the series during that span, every game has been hard fought with the average margin of victory spanning nine points. Last season's contest went down to the wire as ASU escaped with a 48-42 overtime win in Montgomery, Ala.
By virtue of last week's 500-plus yard output, the Panthers rank third in the SWAC in total offense with 417.6 yards per game. Defensively, the Panthers are amongst the nation's best in tackles for loss as they're tied for eighth with 9.2 per game.
The Panthers feature several players who rank near the top of the country and the SWAC in several statistical categories. Junior running back Johnta' Hebert ranks third in the nation in all-purpose yardage (197.4) and leads the SWAC. He also chips in with 87.6 rushing yards per game (6th in SWAC) and averages 25.2 yards per kick return. Senior quarterback Jerry Lovelocke ranks second overall in the SWAC with 212.4 passing yards per game while senior wideout Greg Thurmond ranks first in the SWAC with six receptions per game while linebacker Jerome Howard has amassed 61 tackles for an average of 12.2 tackles per game.
