LADY PANTHERS RENEW RIVALRY WITH STEPHEN F. AUSTIN - (PDF GAME NOTES)Four-time defending Southwestern Athletic Conference champion Prairie View A&M returns to Nacogdoches, Texas, for the first time since 2007 as the Lady Panthers face Stephen F. Austin. The Lady Panthers, led by preseason All-SWAC First Team honoree
Jeanette Jackson, are looking for their second win in the series that dates back to the 1998-89 season.
The Ladyjacks and Lady Panthers renewed their rivalry in 2012, with Stephen F. Austin taking a 62-55 win in Prairie View. Last season, the two teams met at the David Jones Memorial Classic at the University of Houston, with Stephen F. Austin claiming a 76-70 victory. Prairie View A&M's lone victory in the series came in the 2007-08 season, when then-head coach Cynthia Cooper guided the Lady Panthers to a 66-63 win at SFA's Johnson Coliseum.
LAST TIME OUT ...
The Lady Panthers opened the 2014-15 season with a 70-58 loss Friday at Rice. Senior
Jeanette Jackson and junior transfer
Chelsey Rosier led the Lady Panthers with 11 points each. Rice's Jasmine Goodwine posted a double-double to lead the Owls (22 points, 10 rebounds).
The Owls enjoyed a 42-18 advantage in free throws shot, though both teams only converted 50 percent of their free throws.
JACKSON AIMS TO CONTINUE SUCCESS IN 2014-15
Jeanette Jackson leads the Lady Panthers into the 2014-15 season after leading the team and the Southwestern Athletic Conference in scoring last year at 18.8 points per game. The senior guard from Las Vegas, Nev., was named to the All-SWAC First Team last season, and was also the Most Valuable Player of the SWAC Tournament in 2014.
She has already claimed one honor this season as Jackson was named to the SWAC's preseason All-First Team.
STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE
Prairie View A&M isn't afraid to take the court against some of the most powerful programs in the NCAA. This season's non-conference schedule features four games against teams that were ranked in the Associated Press Top 25 Division I Women's Basketball poll at the start of the season.
The Lady Panthers will see two of those teams – No. 6 Stanford and No. 12 North Carolina – in Honolulu, Hawaii, at the Waikiki Beach Marriott Rainbow Wahine Shootout over Thanksgiving Weekend.
Prairie View A&M will also visit preseason No. 5 Texas A&M (Nov. 24) and No. 8 Baylor (Dec. 29).
AIMING FOR HISTORY
The Lady Panthers are coming off their fourth consecutive SWAC Tournament Championship and subsequent trip to the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Tournament. Only two other SWAC teams have accomplished the feat – Jackson State (1982-85) and Grambling State (1996-99).
Since the Southwestern Athletic Conference and its member schools began competition for NCAA Division I championships, no team has ever won five consecutive SWAC Tournament titles.
COMFORTS OF HOME (STATE)
The Lady Panthers will play nine of their 12 non-conference games in the state of Texas this year. This includes eight road games at fellow Texas opponents, with only two of those games – at TCU (Dec. 13) and at Texas–El Paso (Dec. 20) – more than 200 miles from the Prairie View A&M campus.
Prairie View A&M's only games outside of Texas in Fall, 2014, will be a three contests in Honolulu, Hawaii, at the Waikiki Beach Marriott Rainbow Wahine Shootout over Thanksgiving Weekend.
PLENTY OF EXPERIENCE
Though the Lady Panthers only return six players from last season's squad, they do return plenty of scoring and experience to the court. Five of Prairie View A&M's top seven scorers from 2013-14 return to the team in 2014-15
WINNING WHEN IT COUNTS
In her first season at the helm of the Lady Panthers,
Dawn Brown's head coaching career got off to a less-than-ideal start as Prairie View A&M lost its first 10 games, all out of conference.Â
But those games made her team battle-tested, as the Lady Panthers went on to an 11-7 record in conference before sweeping through the SWAC Tournament. All of Brown's wins have come against fellow SWAC programs.
PRAIRIE VIEW A&M VS. SOUTHLAND CONFERENCE
Since the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball era (1981-82), Prairie View A&M is 12-51 against the current member institutions of the Southland Conference. This includes a 2-0 record against Houston Baptist, and a 3-3 record against Nicholls State.
The Lady Panthers are 1-6 against Stephen F. Austin, and 2-8 and 0-11 against longtime Southland member institutions Southeastern Louisiana and Sam Houston State, respectively.
ABOUT THE LADYJACKS
The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks opened the 2014-15 season with a narrow 76-69 loss at home to Louisiana Tech. It was the first win for the Lady Techsters under head coach Tyler Summitt, the son of Women's Basketball Hall-of-Famer Pat Summitt.
Taylor Ross scored 26 points on 12-of-16 shooting in the game for the Ladyjacks, while teammate Porsha Roberts added a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
Stephen F. Austin was picked to win the Southland Conference in a poll of the league's coaches prior to the start of the season.
