Lady Panthers come up short at TCU

FORT WORTH – Prairie View A&M's second-half comeback attempt late in the second half fell short Saturday as the Lady Panthers fell 56-50 at TCU.

Chelsea Prince scored 16 points to lead three TCU players scoring in double-figures Saturday.  Veja Hamilton and Natalie Ventress scored 11 points apiece for the Horned Frogs (6-3).

Senior guard Jeanette Jackson (Las Vegas, Nev. / Sierra Vista HS) scored 13 points to lead the Lady Panthers (2-7), who saw their two-game winning streak snapped. She also handed out a game-high eight assists.

TCU led by as many as 17 points with 5:53 left in the game, but the Lady Panthers had their Big 12 hosts on their heels as they all but erased a 12-point deficit late in the contest. Prairie View A&M scored eight consecutive points in a span of less than a minute between the 2:40 and 1:41 marks of the second half.

Jackson started the run with a 3-pointer from the corner to cut TCU's lead to 53-44, and following a missed TCU layup, Lamaria Cole (Bryan, Texas / Rudder HS / Kansas) quickly gave the Lady Panthers two more points with a layup of her own.

On the next possession, Cole forced a steal in the backcourt, and seconds later knocked down another layup, drawing a foul from Prince in the process. Cole made the free throw and cut TCU lead to 53-49 with 1:41 remaining.

Prairie View A&M forced another turnover on their next defensive play, but were unable to keep control of the basketball, and TCU was able to seal the game at the free throw line in the final minute.

Cole scored eight points for the Lady Panthers, matching her highest total this season against an NCAA Division I opponent. Chelsey Rosier (Tallahassee, Fla. / Gulf Coast State College) added nine points for Prairie View A&M.

The Lady Panthers held the upper hand for the most of the first half, but saw their lead disappear shortly before halftime. The Horned Frogs ended the first half on a 12-0 run and took a 29-19 lead into the midgame break. TCU was 5-of-5 from the field during that span.

TCU has moved all of its women's basketball games to the University Recreation Center (which also hosts the school's volleyball team) while Meyer Coliseum is being renovated.

The Lady Panthers return to action Wednesday when they visit Sam Houston State. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
