PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – The Prairie View A&M Lady Panthers jumped out to a nine-point lead over the first six minutes of Wednesday's home opener and never looked back as they breezed to a 90-38 win over Schreiner.
Â
At William J. Nicks Arena on the PVAMU campus,
Jeanette Jackson (Las Vegas, Nev. / Sierra Vista HS) scored a game-high 22 points to lead the Lady Panthers (1-6) to their first win of the season.
Â
Lamaria Cole (Bryan, Texas / Kansas University) came off the Prairie View A&M bench and scored a career-high 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting. Senior post
Shamiya Brooks (West Point, Ga. / Troupe HS) finished a rebound shy of a double-double, scoring 10 points and blocking two shots in addition to hauling in nine rebounds.
Â
Olivia Lott scored 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting for NCAA Division III Schreiner, which fell to 1-7 with the loss.
Â
The Mountaineers scored the first basket of the game 49 seconds after the tipoff, but the Lady Panthers quickly seized control with an 11-0 run over the next five minutes of game time. Jackson scored four points during that stretch and capped the run with a fast-break layup off a pass from Cole.
Â
Schreiner would get as close as four points when Codi Simmons knocked down a 3-pointer (her only points of the game) to cut PVAMU's lead to 15-11 with 10:10 remaining, but the Lady Panthers responded with eight unanswered points;
Chelsey Rosier (Tallahassee, Fla. / Gulf Coast State College) gave the home team a 23-11 lead with a fast-break layup of her own with 7:56 left to play in the half.
Â
Prairie View A&M's pressure defense was simply too much for the Mountaineers to handle; the Lady Panthers forced 25 turnovers and scored 35 points off Schreiner giveaways.
Â
The Lady Panthers scored the final seven points of the half to take a 41-21 lead into halftime. Prairie View A&M shot 46 percent (17 of 37) from the floor in the first half.
Â
The home team didn't relent in the second half, outscoring Schreiner 11-4 over the first six and a half minutes after halftime to establish a 52-27 lead. For good measure, the Lady Panthers finished the game on 25-3 run over the last six minutes of the contest.
Â
The Lady Panthers sizzled in the second half, shooting 57 percent (20 of 35) from the floor en route to a 49-point period. PVAMU was especially hot from behind the 3-point arc, making seven out of 10 of its long-range shots.
Â
Rosier scored eight points for the Lady Panthers.
Monique Abbs (Phoenix, Ariz. / Stone Mountain CC) scored a PVAMU career-best nine points.
Asha Hampton-Finch (San Antonio, Texas / Roosevelt HS) scored seven points, while
