Shamiya Brooks posted her third consecutive double-double and
Alexus Parker scored a season-high 18 points Monday to lead Prairie View A&M to an 85-57 win over Grambling State.
Brooks scored 13 points and pulled in a career-high 17 rebounds in addition to blocking three shots to lead four Lady Panthers scoring in double figures as Prairie View A&M completed a sweep of its three-game homestand.
The Lady Panthers (6-11) improved to 3-2 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference standings after opening league play with two losses.
Jeanette Jackson scored 15 points for the Lady Panthers, while
Monique Abbs came off the the Prairie View A&M bench to score 10 points, which marked a four-year college career high for the juco transfer.
Klintisha Martin came off Grambling State's bench to lead the Lady Tigers (5-12, 2-4 SWAC) with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Teammate Kiana Jones added 10 points. Grambling State fell to 0-12 on the road this season.
The win was Prairie View A&M's 10th consecutive triumph over Grambling State, and their 21st in their last 22 meetings.
A partial power outage at Nicks Arena delayed the game for approximately 25 minutes after the game's first media timeout with 15:56 remaining in the first half. The Lady Panthers were not fazed by the delay and seized control of the game midway through the first half when they scored 11 unanswered points during an almost six-minute span between the 12:57 and 7:03 marks. Jackson's layup in transition that was spurred by a block from
Kaitlyn Parks gave the Lady Panthers a 26-11 lead with 7:51 left before halftime.
The Lady Panthers led by as many as 24 points during the first period, and by halftime, held a 46-26 lead. The home team shot 54 percent (20 of 37) for the floor before the midgame break.
A 10-0 run early in the second half gave the Lady Panthers their largest lead of the game at 60-30 with 13:53 left to play. Grambling State would get no closer than 19 points for the duration of the contest.
Prairie View A&M shot 50.7 percent (35 of 69) from the floor during the game, which marked their best shooting percentage this year against an NCAA Division I opponent. The only other time the Lady Panthers topped 50 percent from the field was when they shot 51 percent (37 of 72) in a 90-38 win over NCAA Division III Schreiner in December.
Parker in particular was having a good shooting night, as she scored her game-high 18 points on 8-of-13 shooting. Her eight made field goals marked a season high and tied her career mark, set one year and one day ago at Jackson State.
Shaneece Stephens tied her career high by scoring nine points. Parks, a transfer from Pasadena City College in California, also tied her four-year college best by scoring four points.
The Lady Panthers leave Texas this weekend as they travel to Mississippi Valley State and Arkansas–Pine Bluff for their next two contests. Prairie View A&M visits Mississippi Valley State on Saturday for a 2 p.m. tipoff.
