PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas
– Christian Waldron claimed his first win of the season in men's No. 1 singles action, but it was not enough to lift Prairie View A&M to the team victory as Texas–Pan American to an 6-1 victory in the Panthers' season opener Saturday.
The Prairie View A&M women also encountered the same formidable opposition from their visitors from Edinburg, Texas, as the Broncs women's team claimed a 4-0 victory.
Waldron picked up the Panthers' lone victory of the day, defeating opponent Juan Cruz Soria in straight sets by scores of 6-4 and 6-3.
The win avenged Waldron's and doubles partner Sergio Avella's doubles setback to Cruz Soria and Koby Jansen. The Panthers duo lost that one by a score of 6-3 in No. 1 doubles action.
Bruno Snyder had a busy day for the Panthers, as he played the most games of any of the Prairie View A&M players Saturday. He lost a thrilling, three-set match in No. 2 singles action to Jansen by scores of 3-6, 6-0, and 10-6. In No. 2 doubles, he and teammate Ulrich Boyogueno dropped a hard-fought 6-4 decision to Miguel Alvarez-Hevia and Elliot Johnstone.
In women's action, Taylor Lefridge dropped a narrow 6-2, 7-5 decision in No. 1 singles to Katia Stavroulaki. She and Stacy Lackey also had a respectable showing in No. 1 doubles play, falling 6-3 to Stavroulaki and Reegan Greenwood.
PVAMU's
Sydney Thomas was narrowly edged by Dominique Esparza 7-6, with Esparza taking a 7-6 tiebreaker to win the first set in No. 2 singles play. Their match was abandoned after UTPA claimed the 4-0 match victory, with Esparza leading Thomas 5-3 in the second set.
Esparza and Mariana Ranzahuer had a 5-4 edge Thomas and Tatiana Ruhl in No. 2 doubles action, but that match was also abandoned due to time constraints after the Broncs earned their doubles point.
