TCU hands Prairie View A&M first loss of the season

FORT WORTH, Texas – The TCU Horned Frogs outscored Prairie View A&M 18-7 during the second half of Tuesday's game to erase the Lady Panthers' lead before taking a 69-60 win.

Zahna Medley and Veja Hamilton scored 15 points apiece for TCU (4-1) which improved to 3-0 at home this season. The Horned Frogs also handed Prairie View A&M its first loss of the season.

Lamaria Cole led the Lady Panthers (2-1) by scoring 17 points and handing out six assists against a familiar opponent. The senior from Bryan, Texas, played her first two seasons at Kansas, one of TCU's Big 12 opponents.

"I knew it was going to be a big night for Lamaria Cole to come back and play against a team in this conference," head coach Dawn Brown said. "She definitely showed up for us tonight."

Larissa Scott tallied her third double-double in as many games for the Lady Panthers (2-1), scoring 15 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. Monique Abbs came off the PVAMU bench to score a career-high 15 points for the Lady Panthers; Abbs shot 5-of-8 from the field, and made three out of her five 3-point attempts.

"We got a big performance tonight from Monique Abbs, stepping up and giving us 15 points off the bench," Brown said. "We were really pleased with how she played tonight."

The Lady Panthers led their Big 12 opponents 28-20 at the end of the first quarter, but trailed 38-35 at halftime. Prairie View A&M shot 55 percent (12 of 22) from the floor in the first quarter, but made only 25 percent (3 of 12) of their shots during the second 10 minutes.

The Lady Panthers will have a week to rest and prepare for their next opponent, the Lady Techsters of Louisiana Tech. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Ruston, La.

QUOTES
Coach Brown's opening statement:
"We wanted to come out against TCU, a Big 12 school, to see what we are capable of doing. We knew it was going to be a bigger matchup for us, defensively, and we wanted to see how we were going to match up. I knew we were going to come out big in heart. We made some runs and jumped out on them really early. We slowed down a little bit in the second period. We were able to pick it up in the third and fourth, but I think that the lapses that we had in the second quarter caused this to be a close game, and we weren't able to sustain it after that."

Brown, on the strong showing against an opponent from a Power 5 conference:
The way our schedule is set up is such that it builds the level of competition with each game. Tonight, we did come away with a moral victory. Obviously, we wanted to be able to win the game, but there were a lot of things I told the young ladies to take from this game. I told them they have to hold their heads up and to be pleased with their performance. We outplayed them on the stats sheet. The only thing we didn't do well, was to give them more rebounds than we should have. And I think that if we were able to hit some shots, and make some layups down the stretch, then the score would have been a little different.
