MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Alabama State Lady Hornets scored the first eight points of the game Monday and never looked back as they went on to claim a 60-42 win over Prairie View A&M.
 
Britney Wright scored a game-high 21 points for the Lady Hornets (13-13) who moved within a game of third-place Prairie View A&M with a 9-7 record in Southwestern Athletic Conference play.
 
Shamiya Brooks scored 14 points and pulled in 11 rebounds to lead the Lady Panthers (13-15, 10-6 SWAC). 
Asha Hampton-Finch added 11 points and five rebounds for Prairie View A&M.
 
It took the Lady Hornets one minute, 49 seconds to score their first basket of the game, and then led for the duration of the contest. Alabama State led 30-17 at halftime.
 
Against the best field-goal and 3-point defense, the Lady Panthers found baskets hard to come by, as they shot only 24 percent (14 of 58) from the floor. Prairie View A&M was 0-of-9 from 3-point range.
 
The Lady Panthers were scoreless for nearly eight minutes until 
Monique Abbs put in a layup with 12:40 remaining to cut Alabama State's lead to 8-2. Following an offensive foul by the Lady Hornets, Abbs then found Brooks for a layup at the 12-minute mark.
 
From there, the Lady Hornets seized back control of the game, using a 10-0 run to build an 18-4 lead with 8:15 remaining before halftime. A 9-2 run shortly after halftime gave the Lady Hornets their first 20-point lead, stretching Alabama State's advantage to 39-19 with 15:31 left in the game.
 
Abbs scored four points in the game for the Lady Panthers, as did 
Jeanette Jackson and 
Taylor Overshown. Overshown also pulled in five rebounds, matching Hampton-Finch's tally.
 
The Lady Panthers have a short turnaround before their next game, as they host Southern University at William J. Nicks Arena on Thursday. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Prairie View A&M concludes the regular season at home Saturday at Alcorn State.
