Lady Panthers Fall In Regular Season Finale To Alcorn State

BOX SCORE

Alcorn State led from start-to-finish as they handed the Prairie View A&M Lady Panthers a 63-48 loss on Saturday afternoon in the team's home and regular season finale.

The Lady Panthers had a slow start as ASU was the aggressor with an early 6-0 lead four minutes in followed by a 10-2 ASU lead at the 12:11 mark.  Alexus Parker put the team on her back over the next few minutes as she scored five straight to close within 10-7 but the ASU duo of Norianna Haynes and Olivia Brown were red hot as their back-to-back treys upped the lead to 16-9 with 8:53 remaining.

Five straight points from Jeanette Jackson narrowed PVAMU's deficit to 16-13 but they could never capitalize as the Lady Panthers struggled with turnovers and missed shots over the next few minutes.  The Lady Panthers overcame their struggles and closed to within 21-19 with 51 seconds left but ASU scored the final four points of the half en route to a 25-19 halftime deficit.

Once again, turnovers and missed shot opportunities haunted PVAMU in its comeback attempt as they could never overcome its six-point halftime deficit.  Down 31-25 with 16:59 left, ASU went on an 8-2 surge to lead 39-27 as the lead was too much for PVAMU to overcome from that point.  PVAMU closed to nine (43-34) with 7:58 left but a three-minute scoring drought led to a 9-0 ASU run and control of the game.

Playing in her final game in the Baby Dome, Jackson scored 15 points while Parker added 18 points and six rebounds.  Shamiya Brooks grabbed 14 rebounds while Asha Hampton-Finch added eight points.

SWAC Tournament time begins for the Lady Panthers next week as they're unofficially the No. 5 seed with the official bracket announced on Sunday.  The Lady Panthers finished tied for third (10-8) mark with Jackson State and Alabama State but loses the tiebreaker due to ASU and JSU having a better record amongst the three teams.
