Prairie View A&M dropped its home finale as Southern won Sunday's softball rubber match by a 7-1 margin.
Southern scored once to open the contest as PVAMU avoided what could've been a big inning as starter Jessica Long escaped out of a bases loaded jam. PVAMU settled down defensively from that point and held SU scoreless for the next few innings while freshman Destinee Wiliams drove in senior Jazmine Hicks on an RBI single to knot the contest at 1-all after three innings of play.
SU would return to the scoreboard in the fifth as they played small ball to move a runner into scoring position. However, they were aided by a pair of costly PVAMU fielding errors on a fielder's choice as two runs would score for the 3-1 deficit.
PVAMU struggled with making the timely hit as the game went on and SU stretched the lead out with a solo homer in the sixth, a two-run homer and wild pitch in the seventh.
Williams and first baseman Shelby Fellers led PVAMU with two hits apiece with Williams driving in the lone run. Long dropped to 0-5 on the season as she went the distance.
PVAMU hits the road from this point as they'll head to Hawkins, Texas to face Jarvis Christian on Thursday afternoon.
