PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – The Prairie View A&M Lady Panthers return home for their next pair of games as they host Arkansas–Pine Bluff and Mississippi Valley State this weekend. The team opens the homestand Saturday with the Arkansas–Pine Bluff Golden Lions. Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
The Lady Panthers (6-8, 2-3 Southwestern Athletic Conference) snapped a three-game losing streak this past Monday with a 62-52 win at Jackson State. The win was the team's first triumph at Jackson State (head coach
Dawn Brown's alma mater) since 2010.
Alexus Parker led the Lady Panthers with a game-high 19 points. Senior guard
Lamaria Cole added 15 points and a career-high seven steals, besting her previous tally of six steals, which she achieved playing for the Kansas Jayhawks against Southern Illinois–Edwardsville.
Cole leads the Lady Panthers with a scoring average of 15.9 points per game. Her 4.1 assists per game and 3.3 steals per game leads the SWAC in both categories. Senior forward
Larissa Scott contributes 10.9 points and a conference-leading average 11.4 rebounds per game. Parker's recent showing at Jackson State pushed her scoring average into double-digits, as she averages 10.8 points per contest.
The Lady Panthers have two players ranked in the top 20 nationally in four statistical categories. Scott leads the nation with 5.6 offensive rebounds per game, and ranks 11th in overall rebounding. She also ranks 16th in the NCAA's Division I rankings with 37.0 minutes played per contest. Cole's 3.3 steals per game ranks seventh in the nation.
The Lady Panthers lead the all-time series with Arkansas–Pine Bluff 29-10. The series dates back to the 1997-98 season, when the Golden Lions athletics program rejoined the SWAC. Prairie View A&M's .744 winning percentage is its highest against any SWAC opponent.
The Golden Lions of Arkansas–Pine Bluff (4-12, 1-4 SWAC) enter Saturday's contest fresh off a 71-69 win at home over Alcorn State for their first win in league play. The triumph over the Lady Braves ended Arkansas–Pine Bluff's nine-game losing streak dating back to November, and gave the team its first win over an NCAA opponent.
Arkansas–Pine Bluff is led by forward Niya Head, a transfer from Mississippi Delta Community College. In her first year at Pine Bluff, the 5-foot-10-inch junior leads the Golden Lions in both scoring (12.8 points per game) and rebounding (6.8 rebounds per game). Sophomore guard Destiny Brewton averages 11.2 points per contest for Arkansas–Pine Bluff.
