Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Lady Panthers Basketball Falls To Rice

The Prairie View A&M women's basketball team lost at Rice 68-57 in the season opener for both teams.

Tori Carter led PV with 15 points, while teammates Alexus Parker and LaSha Haynes added 11 points each.  Haynes grabbed 11 boards to lead the Panthers.  Mariah Campbell and Jeronia Allen each totaled six points, Campbell also grabbed seven rebounds.

"I think my girls came out and competed and worked hard," said first-year head coach Ravon Justice.  "We just didn't make open shots like I think we should have and we most definitely didn't take advantage of the charity stripe either."

It was a tight first quarter as PV and Rice went back and forth in scoring for the first five minutes of the game.  However, the Owls went on a 10-0 run to take a lead at 21-11 with 2:14 on the clock.  The Lady Panthers rallied back to pull within five at 21-16 heading into the second quarter.

PV began to close in on the Owl's lead in the second quarter, cutting the deficit to two at  23-21. However, a late run by Rice gave them a 38-24 halftime lead.

After Rice pushed the lead to 22 in the third quarter,  the Purple and Gold squad refused to relent.  A late 6-0 run by the Lady Panthers cut the deficit to 56-42 by the end of the third quarter.

Trailing by 15 near the mid point of the fourth quarter, a late run by the Lady Panthers cut the deficit to seven at 62-55, but could get no closer.

"We got a lot of ladies in the mix tonight and got some good quality time out of our starting five," said Justice.  "We had some good spots and some not so good spots, but we played with heart and now we will go back and make the needed adjustments and get ready for our next contest."

The Lady Panthers will get right back into action on Tuesday when PV hosts Nicholls State in a 3 p.m. contest in the William J. Nicks Building.
