Volleyball Battles AAMU, Falls In Four Sets In SWAC Quarterfinals

Two Lady Panthers finished with double-digit kills on Friday afternoon, but it was not enough as the fifth-seed Prairie View A&M volleyball team fell to Alabama A&M, 3-1 (25-23, 25-17, 24-26, 25-19), in the quarterfinals of the SWAC Championships.

The Lady Panthers will end their season with a 10-20 overall record, while the fourth-seeded Bulldogs (15-20) advance to the semifinals tomorrow.

Junior outside hitter Taylor Goudeau finished with a double-double as she poured in 18 kills and 10 digs to pace the Lady Panthers in both categories.  She hit for .188 on 28 attacks and added three blocks (assisted) for PV.  Larissa Martinez was the other PVAMU to finish in double-digit kills as she tallied 16.  She also hit a team best .500 for the match.

"It was a learning experience that when you get to the tournament, you have got to come ready to play," said PVAMU head volleyball coach TaCho Tyler.  "We made some very uncharacteristic mistakes early in the match.  Like I said, this is a learning experience."

The first set saw both teams going back-and-forth, with neither team allowing the other to advance too far ahead.  AAMU was able to take a 13-8 lead, before the Lady Panthers scored the next eight points to make the deficit three, but in favor of PVAMU.  AAMU took the final lead after the final tie at 21 taking the set 25-23 on a Ashundria McNeal kill (AAMU).

Set two had much of the same similarity as set one, however this time AAMU took a six-point advantage in the middle of the set putting them ahead, 16-10, and never relinquishing it. The Bulldogs went on a 7-4 run to take a 23-14 lead.  PVAMU scored two consecutive points to cut the deficit, but Alabama A&M scored two of the next three points to take the set 25-16.

The third set saw Alabama A&M take an early eight-point lead (10-2), before the Lady Panthers went on a run to get within four (20-16).  PVAMU continued to trail 24-21, when they scored the final five points the set.  Sommer Gonzalez's service ace sealed the deal for Prairie View A&M as they took the set 26-24.

Set four was a battle as PV stayed within reach down the stretch seeing five ties, before an attack error by PVAMU gave Alabama A&M a six-point win in the set (25-19) and the match.
