DALLAS – The Prairie View A&M University women's basketball team fell late to SMU Tuesday night at Moody Coliseum.
Â
Alexus Parker scored 15 points,
Jeronia Allen 13, and
Tori Carter 12 for the Lady Panthers (2-2), who led by as many as 13 in the first half. LaSha Haynes had a season-high 11 rebounds.
Â
"I thought my team came out and fought," said Prairie View A&M women's basketball coach
Ravon Justice. "They played hard. We were right there in the game all the way. We just didn't do enough to win tonight."
Â
There were 12 times and eight lead changes in the game, as both teams played tough defense. The Lady Panthers took a double-figure lead in the second quarter, outscoring SMU (2-2) 18-4. A jumper by
Kendra Hicks gave Prairie View A&M its largest lead of the night, 28-15 with 1:00 to play. PVAMU led 28-16 at halftime.
Â
The Lady Mustangs made their run in the third quarter, but the Lady Panthers took a 39-32 lead into the final 10 minutes.
Â
The game was tied five times with three lead changes in the fourth quarter. PVAMU last led 54-52 on a jumper by Parker with 1:40 remaining.
Â
"We have to make sure we don't put ourselves in those type of situations of not being able to finish," Justice said. "Having a lead like that, sometimes it's hard to play with a lead without an experienced team. We just have to learn to play with a lead."
Â
The Lady Panthers return to action this weekend in the Texas-Rio Grande Valley Tournament, facing the host school Friday at 7 p.m. and Marshall Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
