BOX SCORE COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Prairie View A&M University women's basketball team lost its final non-conference game at Texas A&M 90-62 Wednesday at Reed Arena.
Jeronia Allen scored 19 points and added seven rebounds,
Tori Carter scored 13 points with four rebounds, and
Dominique Newman added 13 off the bench with three rebounds and five assists for the Lady Panthers.
Trailing by nine after the first quarter, Prairie View A&M (5-7) played its best basketball of the day in putting together an impressive scoring run. An 11-0 run erased an 11-point deficit over a four minute stretch to tie the game. A free-throw by Allen tied the score at 27-27 with just seven minutes to play in the first half. The game was tied three other times in the period, with PVAMU taking the lead at 33-31 on a Carter jumper with 4:40 to play in the first half.
However, Texas A&M (10-3) outscored the Lady Panthers 12-4 over the remainder of the period to take a 43-37 halftime lead. The run continued in the third quarter as the Lady Aggies scored 16 of the first 18 points in the third quarter to break the game open.
"I thought my kids competed today. They fought hard," said first-year PVAMU head coach
Ravon Justice. "We stuck with the game in the first half. It was very obvious we got away from it in the first 10 minutes of the second half, and it hurt us. We did a lot of good things, and saw things we can take away with confidence going into conference play."
Prairie View A&M opens Southwestern Athletic Conference play Monday at Southern at 5:30 p.m. with a live radio broadcast on KPVU 91.3 FM.
