MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Prairie View A&M women's basketball team saw its four-game winning streak snapped Monday as the Lady Panthers fell 65-54 at Alabama State.
Alabama State's Jasmine Peeples tallied game highs of 18 points and 22 rebounds to lead the Lady Hornets (9-9, 7-2 SWAC) to their seventh consecutive win in Southwestern Athletic Conference play.
Peeples, a 6-foot-2-inch senior from nearby Selma, Ala., also blocked seven shots in the game.
Prairie View A&M (9-9) completed the first round of SWAC play with a record of 5-4.
Lamaria Cole scored 15 points and grabbed four steals to lead the Lady Panthers.
Alexus Parker and
Tori Carter scored 13 points apiece for Prairie View A&M; Parker finished a rebound shy of a double-double, pulling in nine for the game.
HOW IT HAPPENED:The Lady Hornets never trailed but couldn't pull away from Prairie View A&M until the second quarter. Alabama State jumped out to a 6-0 lead less than three minutes in, but back-to-back jumpers from Parker at the 6:02 and 5:39 cut the lead to 6-4.
The two teams exchanged points for the rest of the first period as ASU led 14-12 after the first 10 minutes. Carter tied the game with a pair of free throws 14 seconds into the second quarter.
From there, the Lady Hornets reeled off nine consecutive points as part of a 17-3 run that last for the middle eight minutes of the second period. Ashanti Spencer's fast-break layup with 1:32 left before halftime gave ASU a 30-17 lead.
The Lady Hornets outscored PVAMU 18-7 in the second period, and took a 32-19 lead into halftime.
In the second half, the Lady Panthers would cut the deficit to single digits only once, scoring five consecutive points between the 5:36 and 4:33 marks of the third quarter to slice Alabama State's lead to 39-30. ASU used an 8-0 run between the 8:58 and 5:22 marks of the final quarter to stretch their lead to 19 at 59-40, the Lady Hornets' largest lead of the game.
Prairie View A&M, the best shooting and 3-point shooting team in the conference, was held to 24.1 percent shooting (14 of 58) from the field, 17 percentage points below its season average. The Lady Panthers shot 21.4 percent (3 of 14) from 3-point range.
