PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – The Prairie View A&M men's tennis team hosted Texas A&M–Corpus Christi on Tuesday as the Panthers prepare for their first Southwestern Athletic Conference matches this weekend.
 
The Islanders won the match by a score of 7-0.
 
With heavy winds and the threat of rain, the teams opted to play the singles matches first. An enthusiastic crowd was treated to an entertaining match in flight one between PVAMU's Christian Waldron and Ricardo Mayagoitia. Waldron won the first set 5-7 before the Islanders' player came back with 6-1 and 6-2 wins.
 
The latter sets were filled with shaky lines calls from Mayagoitia, which did not win him any fans among the Prairie View A&M fans.
 
Sergio Avella also gave his Corpus Christi opponent a tough fight in a three-set match in flight two. Avella defeated Javier Pujol 6-4 in the second set after falling behind in a 6-3 set one defeat. Pujol took the third set by a score of 6-3.
 
When the weather cooperated to the point of allowing doubles play, Mayagoitia and teammate Guillaume Rauseo found a competitive match in flight two when they faced the Panthers' Ulrick Boyogueno and Anirudh Yadav. Texas A&M–Corpus Christi won that flight by a 6-4 scoreline.
 
In flight one of doubles play, Waldron and Avella fell 6-2 to Arthur Bedel and Kevin Bettendroffer.
 
Texas A&M–Corpus Christi was the second consecutive Southland Conference team Prairie View A&M faced this week, as they also visited San Antonio for a Sunday match at Incarnate Word. The Cardinals prevailed 7-0.
 
Though it may not have shown in the score, the Panthers gave a tough fight to the Cardinals, as four of PVAMU's five players took at least five games in their matches.
 
Doubles play also featured competitive matches, with Boyogueno and Yadav falling 6-4 to Josip Smoljan and Francisco Bendana in flight two. Avella and Waldron's flight one match was suspended with Joey Vatanadilok and Sebastian Mortier holding a slim 5-4 lead.
 
The Panthers open conference this weekend when they visit Baton Rouge and Southern University for the first of two SWAC roundups.
