Cole's career night leads Lady Panthers to victory at Mississippi Valley State

GREENWOOD, Miss. – Lamaria Cole turned in one of the most memorable performances of her collegiate career Monday in leading Prairie View A&M to an 81-50 win at Mississippi Valley State.

At the LeFlore County Civic Center, Cole scored a career-high 29 points on 13-of-17 shooting to lead the Lady Panthers to their second consecutive win and a weekend sweep of Arkansas–Pine Bluff and Mississippi Valley State. Cole's 13 made field goals also set a new career mark.

The Lady Panthers (11-12) evened their record in Southwestern Athletic Conference play to 7-7. Mississippi Valley State (3-22, 1-14 SWAC) lost its 14th consecutive game. The Delta Devilettes have not won since Jan. 4.

Cole seemed to have little trouble getting to the basket Monday, as she attempted 11 layups, making nine of them for 18 points. She was also 2-of-3 from 3-point range.

Not to be overlooked, Larissa Scott scored 15 points and pulled in five rebounds for Prairie View A&M. LaNikki McMillian scored nine points and matched a career-high with seven rebounds, while Alexus Tori Carter, Taylor Overshown, and Alexus Parker scored eight points apiece.

Overshown's eight points marked a season best for the senior from Houston's Eisenhower High School.

Ashley Beals scored a team-high 20 points for Mississippi Valley State, Feleshia Walters scored 14 points for the Devilettes.

The Lady Panthers return home this weekend for their final pair of home games. Prairie View A&M hosts Alabama State on Saturday, with tipoff scheduled for 3 p.m. The Lady Panthers play their final home game of the season Monday, when they welcome Alabama A&M to William J. Nicks Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Lady Panthers led from start to finish as they jumped out to a 10-2 lead over the first seven minutes of the game. PVAMU would take its largest lead of the quarter when one of Cole's nine layups gave the Lady Panthers a 16-5 advantage five seconds before the end of the opening quarter.

After ceding the opening basket of the second quarter on the Devilettes' first possession of the period, the Lady Panthers embarked on an 11-2 run to stretch their lead to 27-9 with 7:45 left to play before halftime. A jumper by Parker would give the Lady Panthers their first 20-point lead of the game 31-11 with 6:13 left in the quarter. PVAMU took a 36-17 lead into halftime.

Prairie View A&M would not see its lead dip into single digits the rest of the evening. The Devilettes would close the gap to as few as 10 points with 54 seconds remaining in the third period, but would get no closer.

The Lady Panthers did not let up in the fourth quarter as they outscored their hosts 27-3 over the first five minutes of the period. PVAMU scored a season-high 31 points in the fourth quarter, which set a team record for the most points scored in any quarter this season.

Larissa Scott's jumper with 5:06 left in the game stretched the PVAMU lead 73-40. The Lady Panthers would lead by as many as 34 points in the period, stretching their lead to 80-46 on a Parker jumper with 2:07 remaining in the game.
