MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Prairie View A&M men's tennis team defeated Arkansas–Pine Bluff to highlight its three-match trip Alabama for the second Southwestern Athletic Conference roundup weekend.
 
The Panthers' 4-3 win over the Golden Lions on Friday was sandwiched between 4-0 losses to host Alabama State, and  Jackson State.
 
Friday's win over Pine Bluff got off to a good start when the Panthers swept both doubles matches they could fill to take the first point. Christian Waldron and Sergio Avella cruised to an easy 6-0 win over Khutso Leowada and Simon Lewis in flight one, while Anirudh Yadav and Ulrick Boyogueno turned away Sajid Rhaman and Jualon Greig by a score of 6-2.
 
The Panthers then got the three wins they needed in singles play to take the match. Freddy Quintero set the tone with a quick 6-1, 6-0 win ovr Hanif Fudaeel in flight four, while Boyogueno and defeated Leowada 6-1, 6-3 in flight five.
 
Prairie View A&M's final win came in flight three, in which Yadav edged Greig in the first set by a score of 7-5, before winning 6-3.
 
Pine Bluff's lone singles wins came in flights one and two. In flight one, PVAMU's Waldron was forced to retire in the second set after taking the opening set from Rahman 6-1.
 
In flight two, Avella and Lewis needed three sets to decide their match; Lewis won the first set 7-6, taking the tiebreaker 7-4 before Avella came back with a 6-4 win. Lewis then took the single-game tiebreaker by a score of 10-8.
 
The Panthers return to action Saturday when they visit Northeast Texas for a match at Tyler Junior College. Match time is scheduled to 2 p.m.
