NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Prairie View A&M Panthers saw their season come to an end one match short of the championship round Saturday at the postseason Southwestern Athletic Conference men's tennis tournament.
 
Only a day removed from defeating Arkansas–Pine Bluff to reach the semifinal round, the No. 3-seeded Panthers fell 4-1 to the Hornets of Alabama State, who received a first-round bye into the semifinals after finishing among the top two teams.
 
The Panthers jumped out to a 1-0 lead over the Hornets after winning flights one and two in doubles play. Anirudh Yadav and Ulrick Boyogueno edged ASU's Adam Coyne and Takura Mlambo 7-6 in flight two.
 
In his final completed match of his collegiate career, Prairie View A&M senior Christian Waldron teamed with Sergio Avella to defeat Patrik Cvik and Szabin Pusztay 7-5 in flight one play.
 
The Panthers momentum in doubles play would not carry over into singles play, as the Hornets won the lower four flights to get the necessary points needed to advance to the SWAC championship round. Alabama State fell to Jackson State in the championship round Sunday. The Tigers claimed both the regular season and tournament SWAC titles.
 
PVAMU senior Freddy Quintero dropped a hard-fought 6-4, 6-1 decision to Pusztay in flight four of singles play. Quintero was one of four players to claim singles wins the day before against Pine Bluff. Singles matches for Waldron and Avella in flights one and two respectively were unfinished.
 
In spite of playing most of the season with only five players and forfeiting at least one point in those matches, Prairie View A&M claimed third place in the SWAC under first-year head coach Duane Williams, who was hired in September. He had previous been an assistant for the men's and women's teams at PVAMU, and helped lead the men's team to championships in 2010 and 2013.
