IRONDALE, Ala. - By virtue of its doubleheader split on Monday, the PVAMU softball team clinched the West No. 3 seed for Wednesday's SWAC Tournament.
In game one,
Prairie View scored three runs in the top of the seventh to complete a two-inning spurt where the Panthers overcame a 5-2 deficit. In the inning,
Laurisa Hernandez (2-for-4) delivered a RBI single to left to start the scoring, the the Panthers took advantage of a passed ball and a error by Alicia Barajas to claim the lead.
In the sixth, Kyler Ward-Flowers (1-for-4, three RBI) smacked a two-run double to bring the contest within one, following a frame where Southern had pushed its lead to three. The Jaguars would strand three runners in said inning.
Kiara Suttles was 2-for-2, hitting a triple and a solo home run with two RBIs.
Monica Cartwright improved to 5-3 for PVAM, allowing four hits (two runs) and striking out four in 4.0 innings of relief. Tiara Scott took the loss for SUBR (1-1), allowing eight hits and six earned runs while striking out four.
Southern broke open game two with a five-run fourth inning that erased a 2-0 deficit. In the frame, Suttles blasted a two-run homer to left center to tie the contest and spark the Jaguars' scoring run.
Jamani Greer (1-for-3, three RBI) later added a two-run single in the fram. Southern would tack on two more runs to wrap up the contest.
Delphia Holmes allowed five hits in a complete game win for Southern. Barajas was 2-for-4. Hernandez was 2-for-2.
Sabrina Johnson allowed three runs on three hits in 3.0 innings, receiving the loss.
