Football Loses At Texas A&M

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Prairie View A&M University football team lost at Texas A&M 67-0 Saturday in the first gridiron matchup between the two institutions at Kyle Field.

It was a festive and historic day as the two oldest public institutions in the state of Texas met on the football field before more than 96,000 fans as Panther football played on television for the second straight week, this time on the SEC Network Alternate Channel.

Prairie View A&M (1-1 overall, 1-0 SWAC) had two first-half scoring drives into Texas A&M territory but came away with no points. Those missed opportunities hurt against the 20th-ranked Aggies, who broke the game open late in the first half with two touchdowns in the final 1:03 of the second quarter.

"It was a tough game," PVAMU head coach Willie Simmons said. "We knew going in we were going to have to play above ourselves to have a chance against a Top 20 SEC program. I'm proud of the guys. I thought they competed for 60 minutes. They didn't quit. We gave our best punch, and that's all you can ask for."

Demarquo Lastrappe set career highs for receptions and yards, catching six passes for 88 yards, including a 27-yard reception in the second quarter.

Raleigh Johnson made five tackles and had an end zone interception and forced a fumble for PVAMU. Tyquan Fields and Willie Butler recorded the first sacks allowed by Texas A&M this season.

The Panthers return to Southwestern Athletic Conference play next Saturday at Alabama A&M at 6 p.m.
