CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Prairie View A&M University tennis teams had several athletes to advance in rounds after Friday's results during the Contender CrossFit Islander Open at the Thomas J. Henry and H-E-B Tennis Centers hosted by Texas A&M Corpus Christi.

In women's play, junior Neharika Ramos picked up a 6-3, 4-6, 10-6 victory in the first match of day one to move into the round of 16 in the women's singles. Ramos moved into the final eight on Friday evening to advance to Saturday defeating her opponent by the scores of 6-4, 3-6, 10-6.

In the opening round of the women's singles consolation, both Jimena Castellanos and Shaddae Findley had bye's. Newcomer Constanza Aranguiz picked up a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Sophie Boers of UTSA in her first match of the day.Â

Findley faced Milena Achamalov of ULL in the second round and won by the scores of 7-5, 6-4 to make her way into the quarterfinals. Aranguiz also moved into the next round knocking off her opponent Rachel Sadiq of UIW 3-6, 6-2, 10-2. With both players making it into the semifinals, they would have to face each other. Aranguiz moved to the championship round after defeating her teammate 6-0, 6-0. Aranguiz won the title in her first competition of the 2017 season.

In the women's doubles action, the Lady Panthers' duo of Tatiana Ruhl and Findley advanced into the quarterfinals, besting Laura Cabrera and Diya Menon of UTSA in a 6-1 victory. On Saturday the duo fell in a 6-4 heartbreaker to ULL's Dana Radovanovic and Florian Picaut.

On the men's side, three of the four players had byes in the opening round. Newcomer Taquel Lewis knocked off Byik Akinshemoyin of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in a 6-4, 6-4 victory, while his PVAMU teammate Ulrick Boyogueno (6-1, 6-3) dropped his opening match to Gabriel Bonunda of UTSA moving him, Rodrigo Yoshikata, Kevin Ugarteche and Cesar Reyna all to the consolation round. Lewis could not replicate his success in the second round as he fell to Christian Carillo 3-6, 6-0, 14-12.

2017 SWAC freshman of the Year Xavier Lawrence was knocked out of his opening match 6-3, 6-3 by UIW's Medim Ahmic. Anirudh Yadav fell in the second round to Francisco Bendana of UIW by the scores of 6-4, 6-2.

During the Consolation round PV's Boyogueno was defeated by Elliott Johnstone of UTRGV 6-1, 6-3, and Yoshikata fell to Vander Heiden of UIW 5-7, 6-1, 10-8. Ugarteche also dropped his match to Lamar's Roy Stepanov. Reyna split a pair of matches, defeating Akinshemoyin, 6-2, 7-6 (5), before falling to Gabriel Bugiga in the second round (6-3, 6-2).

In the men's doubles action, the Panthers saw two pairings advance to the second round. The duo of Yadav and Ugarteche rolled to a 6-4 victory in the first round. Lawrence and Boyogueno had a first round bye and lost in the second round by TAM-CC's Okkie and Francois Kellerman, 6-2.

The women's team will return to play Friday and Saturday, Sept. 29-30 for the Ragin' Cajun Invitational hosted by the University of Louisiana-Lafayette, in Lafayette, La., at the Cajun Courts.
