JACKSON, Miss – Both the Prairie View A&M men's (4-0) and women's tennis (4-0) teams post wins over the University of Arkansas Pine Bluff, while both teams fell to Alabama State 4-1 on the opening day of the 2017 Southwestern Athletic Tennis Roundup in Jackson, Miss. The matches are being played at different venues for this event.
In women's doubles action the No. 1 team of
Neharika Rama and
Stacy Lackey picked up the first team match 6-0 over UAPB's Amirah Ali and Tia Thomas. The pairings of
Tatiana Ruhl and
Sydney Thomas in the No 2 doubles match gave PVAMU its first point of the game with 6-1 win over Amica Taylor and Taylor Shaw.
The Lady Panthers won three of its single matches. Lackey at the No 2 defeated Taylor 6-0, 6-0. Thomas picked up a win at the No. 3 over Ali by the scores of 6-0, 6-0.
Shaddae Findley picked up the final point for PVAMU over the Golden Lady Lions T. Thomas also with the scores of 6-0, 6-0 at Mississippi College.
In the afternoon match, PVAMU's Thomas and Ruhl at the No 2 won their point in the doubles match over Alabama State's Gabriela Lackova and Marija Blazevic. The Lady Panthers Findley and
Mayte Calmet won their match over Brankica Orlovic and Marine Cartier 6-2 at the JSU Tennis Complex
The men's team posted its first win of the season over UAPB 4-0. In doubles action, the No 2 team of
Xavier Lawrence and
Ulrick Boyogueno won 6-2 over Sajid Rahman and Aravind Vangala 6-2.
Sergio Avella and
Anirudh Yadav also won their set 6-4 over the Golden Lions Jualon Greig and Le'Darrien Ledbetter.
In singles Boyogueno defeated Lewis at the No. 2 6-3, 6-4, while Avella defeated Grieg at the No. 3 7-5, 6-2. Zach Suico sealed the game for the Panthers winning at the No. 6 6-2, 6-2 over Khusto Ledwaba.
PVAMU will continue its weekend action for the second day of the SWAC Round Up when they face Alabama A&M at 9 a.m. at Mississippi College. In the afternoon game the teams will face Southern at the Tennis Center of the South for a 2 p.m. match.
