PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas — Prairie View A&M tennis team was edged by Navy 4-3, Monday in a match played at the PVAMU Tennis Courts.
The Panthers (3-16) captured wins in singles at the bottom of the lineup, but a sweep in doubles play and wins at Nos. 1, 2 and 3 positions gave the Midshipman (12-10) the victory.
PVAMU picked up a set in doubles winning at the No. 1 position with the team of Ulrick Boyogueno and Xavier Lawrence over Gabriel Pilones and Zach Jennings, 6-4.
Sergio Avella claimed a 7-5, 7-5 win over Navy's Walker Sims at the No. 3 singles position to make it a 3-1 lead for the Mids. The Panthers made it a close final margin with straight set wins at the remaining two contests. First, Freddy Quintero walked off the No. 5 court with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Andrew Hicks. The final point went to Zachary Suico with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Joseph Cooke at the No. 6.
Prairie View's Lawrence at the No. 2 position was in potential to win his set by forcing a third set, but he fell to the Navy's Matthew Lee 6-3, 7-6, 6-1 to give Navy the 4-3 win.
The Panthers schedule will head to Montgomery, Ala., for the Regular Season Roundup II, starting Friday at the Olean Black Underwood Tennis Center.
