Tennis Teams Wrap SWAC Round Up

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — The Prairie View A&M women's team finished 2-2, while the men's team concluded their weekend with a 1-2 finish during the Southwestern Athletic Roundup II, held on the campus of Alabama State at the Olean Black Underwood Tennis Complex and other city venues.
 
The women's team started its weekend posting a 4-2 loss to Jackson in the Friday morning session and concluded the afternoon with a 4-3 win over Grambling. They also split matches on Saturday, with a 4-0 win in the morning round over Mississippi Valley, falling later to Alcorn State 4-3.
 
Jackson State 4, PVAMU 2 – Friday, 9 a.m.
During the morning match-up at the O'Conner Tennis Center the Lady Panthers opened the doubles earning a set by Neharika Rama and Stacy Lackey at the No. 1 position over Jackson State's Oni Jonas and Ariel Dickson, 7-6. Sydney Thomas and Tatiana Ruhl defeated Tyler Smith and Lucia Solis, 6-2 to give PVAMU its first point.
 
At the No. 3 position in singles Thomas defeated Jones of JSU 4-1 to give the Lady Panthers their second point of the match, but could not pull anymore points to close the match 4-2 with Jackson State taking the victory.
 
PVAMU 4, Grambling 3 – Friday 2 p.m.
In the afternoon match up, the Lady Panthers once again opened its session earning the doubles point.  Rama and Lackey posted a 6-2 win in the No. 1 position over Tanyaradzwa Manguje and Bryttish Burts. Timara Maxwell and Shaddae Findley also posted a win at the No. 3 position to earn PVAMU its point, with a win over Gramblings Danna Galeano and Anatasya Reshetnikova 7-5.
 
Prairie View A&M picked up single points by Roma over Manguje, 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 1 position, Thomas defeated Phonephat Philavvong at the No. 3 position by the scores of 7-6, 4-6, forcing a deciding set of 6-4. Findley sealed the deal with a 4-0 win over Reshetnikova to give the Lady Panthers the 4-3 win.
 
PVAMU 4, Miss. Valley 0 – Sat, 9 a.m.
Ruhl and Maria Lackey posted a 6-0 win at the No. 2 position over Shaneka Hubbard and DeAlma Cole to give the Lady Panthers its first set point. At the No. 3 position PVAMU won its second set with a win by Maxwell and Findley over MVSU's Tailyn May and Maya Murray also 6-0.
 
In singles action, Trinity Randolph defeated Sidney Newport at the No. 3 position to give the Lady Panthers its third point posting 6-0, 6-0 scores. At the No. 4 position Maxwell also posted a win taking a 3-0 lead over the Delta Devilettes, with a win over Cole with the scores of 6-1, 6-0. M. Lackey closed out the match with a win over Kelsea Kline at the No. 6 positon with the scores of 6-0, 6-0 to give the Lady Panthers a 4-0 win over Mississippi Valley.
 
Alcorn State 4, PVAMU 3 – Saturday, 2 p.m.
The Lady Panthers captured wins in the singles at the No. 3, 4 and 6 position giving them their three points in the match.
 
Thomas claimed a 6-3, 6-4 win over Alcorn's Klavdija Bukovec at the No. 3, while Findley nabbed a 6-3, 6-4 win over Natalia Parchowska at the 4 position. In the finale set Maxwell defeated Maddison Brackenreg at the No. 6 position 6-4, 6-2 to close out a 4-3 loss to the Lady Braves.
 
In men's action the Panthers opened with a 4-2 loss to Jackson State on Friday.  Then splitting its matches with a 5-0 win over Mississippi Valley, and falling in the afternoon match 4-0 to Alcorn on Saturday.
 
Jackson State 4, PVAMU 2
The Panthers picked up its points in the single sets by Xavier Lawrence posting a 6-3, 6-1 win over Jackson State's Andrey Alawi at the No. 1 position. Ulrick Boyogueno defeated Ryan Swanier at the No. 2 position with the scores of 6-3, 6-2 giving Jackson State a 4-2 win. 
 
PVAMU 5, Mississippi Valley 0
 
The Panthers opened up its Saturday matches with a point in the doubles starting at the No. 2 position with a win by Anirudh Yadav and Sergio Avella defeating John Sansing and Rodorious Turner, 6-0.  Freddy Quintero and Zach Suico followed suit to defeat Valley's Romello Nalopa and James Johnson 6-0.
 
PVAMU captured the singles matches posting wins in four out of the six positions.  At the No. 2 Boyogueno defeated Sansing 6-0, 6-0, while teammates Avella, Quintero and Suico won in each one of their positions 6-0, 6-0. Avella defeated Jordan Freeman at the No. 3, Quintero defeated Turner at the No. 4 and Suico closed out the singles winning over Nalopa at the No. 6 position.
 
Alcorn State 4, PVAMU 0
Boyogueno teamed with Lawrence in doubles play at the start of the match, and the duo defeated Kert Kilumets and Nikita Kostikov, 6-3, at the no. 1 position.
 
Avella's match against Kostikov of Alcorn State at the No. 3 position in singles was a fight to the finish.  The first set, Avella had the momentum, but dropped the set 6-4. Then dropping the second set 6-3 to give the Braves the 4-0 victory.
 
Both teams will return home for doubleheader matches on Wednesday, March 22 at the PVAMU Tennis Courts.  The women will open up with a morning session against the University of Nebraska at Omaha for a 10 a.m. match. At 2 p.m. both the men's and women's team will face Newman University.
