The power continued to come through for the Prairie View A&M University softball team on Monday
Ashley Higgins pitched a no hitter in a 8-0 win in game one, then stunned the Bulldogs with a 8-7 victory following a walk-off two-run homer from Laurisa Hernandez.
Game 1 - PVAMU 8, Jarvis Christian 0: Higgins (5-8) was able to pick up the win as she pitched the best game of the season. She faced 15 batters in five innings, striking out two in hurling the shutout of the Bulldogs.
In the day's opener, majority the scoring was in the first inning as the Lady Panthers collected six runs on four hits.
Shelby Williams went 2-for-3, with a RBI.
Kylar Ward-Flowers (2RBI) and
Alyssa Garcia (RBI) both drove in runs.
S. Williams' bunt single opened the frame, then stole second before
Briana Knowles singled on a bunt. While
Destinee Williams was at bat, both players took a base advancing S. Williams in scoring position. In the same segment on a wild pitch S. Williams scored and Knowles advanced to third. D. Williams was walked. With a runner on first and third,Ward-Flowers singled to right field scoring both Knowles and Williams. Hernandez was hit by a pitch. With two outs,
Amanda Ford was walked loading the bases. Natalie McLennan was also walked moving each runner to the next base also adding another run (4-0).
Rounding back to the top of the batting order S. Williams singled to center field scoring Hernandez with the bases still loaded. Knowles was walked moving each runner around the bases scoring Ford for a 6-0 lead.
The Lady Panthers struck again in the bottom of the second with Ward-Flowers and Hernandez scoring to take an 8-0 lead, one that they never relinquished closing the game out in five innings.
Game 2 - PVAMU 8, Jarvis Christian 7: The Lady Panthers was able to collect six hits on the Bulldogs, but the biggest ones came in the bottom of the sixth as PVAMU scored three runs to overcome a 7-3 deficit.
Hernandez opened the frame with a single up the middle. With one out,
Alyssa Garcia doubled to right center advancing Hernandez to third.
Kiara Ross (1-for-2, 3RBI) tripled to right center scoring both Hernandez and Garcia to get within two (7-5). S. Williams singled to up the middle on one out scoring Ross this would put the Lady Panthers down by one at 7-6.
The comeback was completed in the bottom of the seventh. Ward-Flowers singled to left center on one out. McLennan came into pinch run for Ward-Flowers, before stealing second base. With one runner on and Hernandez facing a full count, the slugger blasted a shot over center field to give the Lady Panthers the victory.
Taylor Drury came on in relief to earn the win, pitching 4.2 innings, allowing two runs on three hits, striking out one.
PVAMU softball will return to the diamond Friday hosting SWAC opponent Miss. Valley State in a 3 p.m. first pitch.
