Softball Sweeps Weekend Series Over SU; Delgadillo Throws First Collegiate Win

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas — The Prairie View A&M softball team had a thrilling comeback in an extra inning Saturday in game one taking a 12-11 win over Southern, before taking the second game 6-4 and freshman Vanessa Delgadillo pitching a complete contest to get her first collegiate win of the season and get the weekend series sweep over SU at the PVAMU Softball Complex.

 
Game 1, Prairie View A&M 12, Southern 11 (8 inn.). The Lady Panthers jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second.  Laurisa Hernandez singled up the middle and Kelsey Coronado came right behind her to hit a single to center filed. Both ladies advanced to their next bases on a passed ball to place them in scoring position. 

 
With an error by the infield Alyssa Garcia landed on base before taking second and scoring both Hernandez and Coronado.   Kellady Johnson also reached base on an error advancing Garcia home.  Shelby Williams singled down third base line, before stealing second while Knowles was at bat.  Knowles hit a sac-fly to center field, which landed S. Williams on third and scoring Johnson ending the inning 4-0.

 
Southern bounced back keeping the game close, scoring three runs in their half of the third inning.  PVAMU would rebound in the bottom of the third tacking on another run to take a 5-3 lead. Hernandez singled to left center, before A. Garcia singled to left field  scoring Hernandez. 

 
PVAMU scored a run in the fourth after a pitching change by SU. Johnson started the top of the frame with a double to left center before taking a third base on the throw. With one out, a sac fly scored Johnson as the Lady Panthers took a 6-3 advantage.

 
Southern scored two runs at the top of the fifth frame to stay within range of the Lady Panthers 6-5.  Prairie View pounded out two more runs on back-to-back homers by both Coronado and A. Garcia to take an 8-5 lead.

 
Southern scored twice in the sixth and once in the seventh to force an extra inning. 

 
Southern took the first lead of the game in top of the eighth scoring three runs to take an 11-8 lead over the Lady Panthers. With five hits and a pair of Lady Jaguar errors helped four Lady Panthers cross the plate to take the win.

 
 PVAMU's bats caught fire in the bottom of the eighth frame, tying up the game at 11 apiece.  Johnson reached base on a single to right field, before S. Williams singled to the pitcher placing Johnson in scoring position.  Knowles singled on a bunt to move each runner around to their consecutive bases to load them.  Destinee Williams slung a single right up the middle scoring both Johnson and S. Williams.  Kylar Ward-Flowers then singled to center field, before a throwing error landed her on second advancing D. Williams to third and scoring Knowles.

 
With two outs and Coronado at the plate the catcher threw the ball down third base line to try to catch Ward-Flowers off guard, but the error cost the Lady Jaguars and Ward-Flowers came across the plate to get the final run and the 12-11 win for the Lady Panthers.

 
Game 2, PVAMU 6, SU 4

 
Southern struck first in the top half of inning one to take a 2-0 lead. The Lady Panthers struck back as S. Williams singled up the middle and taking a second base on the throw. 

 
The Lady Panthers scored two runs in each of the second and third innings. Coronado doubled to left field to open frame two. A. Garcia followed with a double also to left field scoring Coronado. With A. Garcia in scoring position S. Williams singled to the shortstop scoring A. Garcia to put PVAMU up 3-2.

 
In the third  Ward-Flowers hit a double to left center, before Hernandez singled also to left center Jennifer Garcia had came in to pinch run for Ward-Flowers and with the hit landed her on third. On a ground out J. Garcia scored and Hernandez advanced to second. A. Garcia hit a single to left center to push Hernandez across the plate to take a 5-2 lead.

 
Each team was held scoreless until the bottom of the sixth when Knowles led off the inning reaching base on an error and was followed by a D. Williams single to right field scoring Knowles giving the Lady Panthers their final run of the game taking a 6-2 lead.

 
Delgadillo got the win, her first of the season, facing 32 batters and putting in 7.0 innings of work.  The offense was lead both by Hernandez and A. Garcia, as Hernandez went 5-8 with three runs and an RBI and A. Garcia was 5-7 with three runs and six RBIs. 

 
The Lady Panthers will play at Jarvis  Christian Thursday in a doubleheader starting at noon.
