PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – In a fight to the finish, the Prairie View A&M University softball team fell to the University of Arkansas Pine Bluff, 8-7.
Amanda Ford put the first run on the board for the Lady Panthers in the bottom of the third after hitting a double to right field. On a Kellady Johnson ground out to the shortstop, Ford came across the plate with the score at 6-1.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Lady Panthers struck again on of a Laurisa Hernandez homerun to make the score 6-2.
Held to just two runs through the first five innings, the Lady Panthers showed some spark in the bottom of the sixth with back-to back singles to open the frame by Destinee Williams and Kylar Ward-Flowers. Kelsey Coronado had an infield single to load the bases. Alyssa Garcia hit a grand slam over the centerfielder to make the score 7-6,
Arkansas Pine Bluff scored once in the seventh to take an 8-6 lead. In the bottom of the seventh frame Shelby Williams bunted to land on first, moved to second on a steal. Kiara Ross reached on an infield single to the shortstop, advancing S. Williams. With no outs D. Williams hit a single to right field scoring S. Williams but PVAMU would not score again.
Prairie View A&M will return to the diamond for the conclusion of the three game series when they face UAPB in doubleheader action on Saturday with a noon first pitch on The Hill at the PVAMU Softball Complex. Fans can also listen to the doubleheader on pvpanthers.com/sportsnetwork.
